Srinagar, Dec 29 (GNS): Police on Tuesday said that a man admitted to strangulating his wife after a brawl over “Mehr and gold ornaments” in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district last week.

A police spokesperson said that on December 21, Police Post Ajas received a written complaint from one person namely Abdul Rehman Matahanji son of Abdul Gaffar Matahanji of Laharwalpora Bandipora, stating that his daughter namely Afrooza Bano was killed by her husband—Shabir Ahmad Pahloo son of Nazir Ahmad Pahloo of S.K Payeen Bandipora.

Accordingly, a case (FIR No.177/2020) under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Sumbal and investigation was taken up, the spokesperson said in a statement issued to GNS.

Subsequently, he said, a special team headed by Duty Officer Police Post Ajas recovered the body of the woman and after completing all medico-legal formalities handed over it to her legal heirs for last rites.

During the course of investigation, he said, officers came to know that the woman’s husband was involved in the commission of the crime. After strenuous efforts and swift action of police, he was arrested.

“During questioning, the accused admitted that during the intervening night of 20/21 December the duo were engaged in a brawl over Mehar and Golden ornaments and he strangulated his wife to death,” he said. Shabir has been arrested and shifted to Police Station where he remains in custody. “Further investigation in the case is going on.” (GNS)
