‘Flight disruption, slippery road conditions likely as MeT forecasts heavy rains, snow on Feb 25-26’
Srinagar, Feb 22 (GNS): Weatherman on Monday forecast “erratic” weather in Jammu and Kashmir till the end of this month.
An official of the local meteorological department said that heavy rain/snowfall at some places in Jammu and Kashmir is expected on February 25-26 which may cause disruptions of flights and slippery road conditions Banihal-Ramban, Zojila, Mugal road etc.
“Weather is going to remain erratic in J&K and Ladakh during 22nd (night) till ending February. Under the influence of two Western Disturbances, scattered to widespread rain /snow is most likely in Jammu and Kashmir during 22nd Night to Ending February.
“This system is most likely to affect North Kashmir, extreme western Ladakh during next 2days, central, south Kashmir, Pirpanjal and Jammu region from 25th onwards,” a meteorological department official told GNS. He said that heavy rain and snow are expected at some places during 25-26th February.
“Probable impacts include slippery Road condition on Banihal-Ramban, Zojila, Mugal road etc and May cause disruption of flights on 26th,” the official added.
Meanwhile, due to overnight cloud cover, the minimum temperatures increased considerably across Kashmir Valley, weatherman said on Monday.
A meteorological department official told GNS temperatures increased above sub-zero level across Kashmir Valley with Srinagar recording a low of 5.8°C against 1.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 4.9 degrees above the normal for this time of the year in Srinagar, the official said.
Qazigund, the gateway town of J&K, recorded a low of 3.0°C against 0.0°C on the previous night.
The mercury settled at 1.2°C at Pahalgam against minus 1.8°C on the earlier night in the world-famous tourist resort while Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of 4.0°C against 1.5°C on the previous night, he said.
The minimum temperature settled at 4.0°C in Kupwara against 0.2°C on the previous night while Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort, recorded a low of 0.6°C against minus 0.5°C on the earlier night, he said. (GNS)
