Dharamshala, Jan 3: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken serious cognisance of the tragic suicide of a 19-year-old student at Government Degree College, Dharamshala, allegedly linked to ragging, harassment and sexual misconduct on campus.
In a statement issued as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, the UGC said it has decided to constitute a Fact-Finding Committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances leading to the incident. The Commission assured that those found guilty will not be spared and stringent action will be initiated against the culprits, reiterating that student safety remains paramount.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage after allegations surfaced that the student was subjected to prolonged harassment.
According to the victim’s father, Vikram Kumar, his daughter was physically assaulted and intimidated by three fellow students on September 18, 2025, while a professor allegedly subjected her to obscene acts.
Following the complaint, police registered an FIR against the accused professor and three students, and investigations are currently underway.
The case has once again raised serious concerns over campus safety, ragging, and accountability within educational institutions, with calls growing for strict enforcement of anti-ragging norms and protection mechanisms for students. (KNC)
