Ganderbal,March 27 : The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) on Friday carried out a demolition drive against illegal tin sheds in the Sonamarg area following directions from the High Court banning unauthorised constructions in the tourist zone.

The action was undertaken along the Sindh nallah and bypass area, where several structures had been erected by pony operators, officials said.

The move comes as part of intensified enforcement measures aimed at regulating unauthorised constructions and preserving the ecological balance of the popular tourist destination.

Officials said multiple illegal tin sheds were identified during inspections and subsequently removed during the drive.

The demolition was carried out on the directions of the Chief Executive Officer of the SDA, with enforcement teams and officials present to ensure the operation was conducted in accordance with legal procedures.

Authorities said the drive is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the environmental integrity and aesthetic appeal of Sonamarg, which attracts a large number of tourists annually.

“The action is part of our continued efforts to regulate unauthorised constructions and protect the natural environment,” officials said.

No resistance or untoward incident was reported during the demolition process, officials added.

The SDA reiterated that strict action would continue against violations, warning that any further unauthorised construction in the area would invite similar enforcement measures.

The High Court has imposed a complete ban on illegal structures in Sonamarg, prompting authorities to step up monitoring and compliance checks in recent weeks.

Sonamarg, located in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, is known for its scenic landscapes and serves as a key tourist hub, making environmental regulation a priority for authorities.

Further enforcement drives are expected as part of a broader crackdown on encroachments in the area. [KNT]
