May 10: In a continued and coordinated effort to curb the menace of narcotics across North Kashmir, Police in Baramulla & Sopore have achieved significant success in separate actions against illegal possession and cultivation of illicit poppy crop under the ongoing anti-drug enforcement campaign.
In Baramulla, Police Post Wagoora received specific information regarding illegal storage of illicit poppy crop in an orchard located at Nowpora Jagir. Acting promptly, Police registered FIR No. 47/2026 at Police Station Kreeri and initiated investigation.
During the course of investigation, a police team recovered approximately 5.8 kilograms of illicit poppy crop from the orchard belonging to one Gh. Mohi-Ud-Din Dar son-in-law of Gh. Mohammad Dar resident of Nowpora Jagir. The contraband was seized on the spot in the presence of the Executive Magistrate 1st Class Baramulla and officials from the Agriculture Department Wagoora. Further investigation in the case is underway.
Meanwhile, in Sopore, Police launched an anti-poppy cultivation drive under the ongoing 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan following credible inputs regarding illegal cultivation of opium poppy at village Reban falling within the jurisdiction of Police Post Fruit Mandi.
Accordingly, FIR No. 112/2026 was registered at Police Station Sopore and investigation was taken up. A joint team comprising officials from Police, Excise, Agriculture, and Revenue Departments conducted a coordinated operation at the identified location. During the drive, the illegally cultivated poppy crop was identified and destroyed on the spot after completion of all legal formalities. Samples of the crop were collected and seized for further examination.
Police have reiterated that illegal cultivation, possession, and trafficking of narcotic substances are serious offences under the NDPS Act and warned that strict legal action will continue against those involved in such activities.
J&K Police have reaffirmed their commitment to eliminating the drug menace from society and appealed to the public to cooperate by sharing any information related to narcotics or other unlawful activities.
