Srinagar, Jun 1: The President of India has appointed Justice Sanjeev Kumar, a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court following the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the appointment has been made in exercise of powers conferred under Article 223 of the Constitution of India.

The notification states that Justice Sanjeev Kumar shall discharge the functions of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh consequent upon Justice Arun Palli’s appointment to the apex court.

Justice Sanjeev Kumar is a senior judge of the High Court and has served in various judicial capacities over the years. His appointment as Acting Chief Justice will remain in effect until further orders regarding the regular appointment to the post.

The development comes shortly after Justice Arun Palli was elevated to the Supreme Court, creating a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. (JKNS)
