19-month-old child has lost his vision after undergoing treatment at a civil hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, with his family accusing a doctor of administering saline nasal drops into his eyes.

The incident took place on May 29, when Indraj Vishwakarma took his son, Vinay Vishwakarma, to the Civil Hospital in Banda after the child developed cold symptoms and redness in the eyes.

According to the complaint filed by the father, the on-duty government doctor examined the child and administered saline nasal drops into his eyes during treatment. The doctor also prescribed other medicines, including paracetamol syrup, an injection and additional medication, the family claimed.

The child’s condition worsened within a few hours, according to the complaint.

The family said they remained at the hospital for several hours, but seeing no improvement, doctors referred the child to the district hospital in Sagar. He was later advised advanced treatment at a higher medical facility.

Vinay was subsequently taken to AIIMS Bhopal for specialised treatment.

According to the complaint, doctors at AIIMS informed the family that the child had permanently lost vision. The father has claimed that doctors indicated the loss of eyesight could be linked to incorrect treatment or medical negligence.

Following the incident, Indraj Vishwakarma lodged a complaint at Banda police station, demanding action against the doctor and other hospital staff involved in the treatment.

He told police that while he did not know the doctor’s name, he could identify him.

The allegations have prompted an official inquiry.

Block Medical Officer Yogendra Khatik said the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) has constituted a committee to investigate the matter.

“The matter is being investigated by a committee constituted by the CMHO. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe,” Khatik said.

Authorities have not yet issued a detailed response to the family’s allegations regarding the treatment administered to the child.

The family has demanded a fair and impartial investigation and strict punishment for those found responsible.

The findings of the inquiry are expected to determine whether any medical negligence occurred and whether action will be taken against the doctor and hospital staff involved in the case.( _IT_)
