New Delhi, July 7 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three persons, including an Assistant Engineer (Civil) of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Ladakh, and two labour supply agents from Kargil, in connection with the alleged misappropriation of BRO funds.

According to a CBI press release issued on Tuesday, the arrested Assistant Engineer was posted as Officer In-Charge of Khatse Battalion Sector under 81 RCC, BRO. The agency alleged that the officer, in conspiracy with the two manpower supply agents, fraudulently misappropriated BRO funds by generating payments in the names of non-existent labourers. The misappropriated money was allegedly deposited into the Assistant Engineer’s account through the agents.

The CBI stated that it had earlier registered four FIRs in connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds in various BRO projects in Ladakh. Following searches conducted at 26 locations on Monday, the agency carried out another search in Himachal Pradesh as part of the ongoing investigation.

The arrested accused are being produced before the jurisdictional court in Ladakh after completion of all legal formalities.

The agency said the cases involve allegations of criminal misconduct and bribery by public servants under the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with offences of conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust and forgery under the Indian Penal Code, based on complaints lodged by the Ministry of Defence.

The CBI said the investigation is continuing and reiterated its commitment to conducting a comprehensive and expeditious probe into the alleged fund misappropriation case.(KNC)
