Sukh Deo Sharma convicted for demanding and accepting ₹35,000 bribe from complainant
Ghaziabad, September 11:A CBI Court in Ghaziabad has sentenced a former senior section engineer of the Indian Railways to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10,000 in a bribery case dating back to 2016.
According to a press release issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the court on September 10, 2026, convicted Sukh Deo Sharma, who was then serving as Senior Section Engineer (Electrical), Traction Distribution (TRD), Head Quarters, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer Office, Agra Cantt, Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
The case was registered by the CBI on January 1, 2016, following allegations that Sharma had demanded an illegal gratification of ₹70,000 from a complainant in return for providing approval for five trailers/vehicles belonging to a Mumbai-based private firm to cross the railway track through Rail Gate Pathhol in Agra.
CBI laid trap, engineer caught red-handed
Following the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on January 1, 2016. During the trap operation, Sharma was allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting ₹35,000 as the first instalment of the illegal gratification.
The CBI stated that the amount was allegedly accepted as illegal gratification, other than legal remuneration, in connection with the approval sought by the private firm.
Chargesheet filed in February 2016
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on February 23, 2016. The charges were subsequently framed by the court on March 21, 2016.
The case then proceeded through trial, during which the prosecution presented evidence in support of the allegations.
Court finds accused guilty
After completion of the trial, the CBI Court, Ghaziabad, found Sukh Deo Sharma guilty and sentenced him to four years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
The conviction brings to conclusion a case that originated with the CBI trap operation conducted more than a decade ago.
The CBI has reiterated its commitment to pursuing corruption cases involving public servants and taking such matters to their logical conclusion through investigation and prosecution.(KNC)
