Srinagar, Sep 19: The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited has initiated a fresh round of infrastructure works covering receiving-station augmentation, replacement of ageing equipment, feeder improvements and network stabilization across Kashmir, with several tenders issued or extended during September.
Among the latest works is a tender issued on September 18 for replacement of 11-kV vacuum circuit breaker panels at various receiving stations under KPDCL’s Sopore division, with the tender process scheduled to continue until October 8.
A separate tender issued on September 11 covers augmentation of the receiving station at BK Pora, while another September 16 tender combines stabilization and improvement of the 33-kV Nowbugh-Charar-i-Sharief line with stabilization of the Bemina-KP Bagh and Bemina Exhibition lines. The latter work also includes provision of a second source of GIS Tengpora Grid supply to Receiving Station Rakhi Arth.
KPDCL has also floated work for replacement of worn-out conductors and rotten poles under its ED-I jurisdiction. Earlier September tenders included augmentation of the Hafroo receiving station and enhancement of distribution transformer capacity in areas including Kauser Colony Palpora and Gassi Mohalla.
The current programme follows several infrastructure tenders issued earlier in the year. These included augmentation of receiving stations at Karanagar, JVC, Hafroo and BK Pora, replacement of 33-kV current transformers at a number of receiving stations and restoration and stabilization works on several 33-kV lines.
The concentration of works on receiving-station capacity, circuit-breaker panels, transformers, conductors and alternative power sources points to multiple network requirements being addressed simultaneously. However, the tender documents by themselves do not establish whether the individual works are primarily driven by rising electricity demand, equipment ageing, fault history, network constraints or the need for additional redundancy.
One current tender specifically describes the Watalkadal and M.R. Gunj project as augmentation and segregation of 11-kV feeders to overcome LCP constraints, while the Rakhi Arth work provides for a second source of grid supply.
The scale and spread of the current works make the next question one of measurable impact: whether the projects result in fewer interruptions, improved voltage stability, greater network capacity and faster restoration of supply in the areas covered by the works.
KPDCL’s tender activity therefore provides a substantial infrastructure trail, but outage statistics, peak-load data, equipment failure records and project costs would be required to determine the extent to which the works address existing reliability problems and what improvements consumers can expect after completion.
