DC Kupwara Visits to Assess Situation

Jahangir Lolabi

Kupwara, Mar 29: (GNS) Authorities have suspended vehicular movement on Kupwara-Lolab road following damage to a bridge caused by flashfloods at Badibera area along the thoroughfare.

SDM Sogam Aijaz Ahmad Bhat told GNS that the traffic movement has been halted to avert any exigency along the road. “Part of a plinth of the bridge has got washed away due to flashfloods”, the official informed.

“Drivers are asked to seek alternate routes to avoid any unnecessary jam along the road”, the official said adding that “We urge the public not to come near the site.”

Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Imam-ud-Din later in the day visited the spot to assess the situation.
Talking to media persons, the top-district officer said that “It would be premature to say anything as of now due to overcast weather conditions” adding that “We will see as what could be done only once the water level recedes.”

Asking to Department concerned to assess the strength of the bridge, the officer said that “If it is declared unsafe, a new bridge, as demanded by the local residents, will be constructed.”

The DC in the meantime asked the commuters to continue their travel plans on alternate routes till further orders even as appealing the local residents to restrain themselves from approaching the site. (GNS)
