Kupwara: Sub-district Hospital has achieved another medical milestone in less than a week’s time much to the elation of the local populace.

As learnt, the department of general and minimal access surgery at SDH Kupwara has performed Right Hemi-colectomy with retroperitoneal lymph no lymph node dissection.

Medical Superintendent Dr Mir Mohammad Shafee, in a statement issued here, said that the surgery is done on patients with carcinoma colon and is routinely performed at tertiary care institutions like SKIMS & SMHS and our hospital has now got the distinction of being first peripheral hospital to perform such a major surgery.

The surgery, the statement reads, was performed by our surgical team headed by Dr Gulzar Ahmad Bhat Consultant Surgeon and included Dr Anil DNB Resident, Wali Mohd and Tanveer while the Anesthesia team was headed by Dr Farooq Ahmad Khan and Dr Showkat Consultant Anesthesia and also included Dr Fayaz, Dr Tayeb DNB Residents, GR Bhat and Veerpal Singh and other support staff included Shabir Ahmad,  Nazir Ahmad and Bashir Ahmad. 

“This lengthy procedure of around 4 hours went smoothly and uneventfully and the patient was started on orals on third post operative day of surgery and is ready to be discharged.”

Talking to media Dr Gulzar said that this is testimonial of the growth of surgical facilities in this remote part of our UT and now hardly any patient needs to move to Srinagar for advanced surgical procedures.

Pertinent to mention here that Dr Gulzar has successfully performed advanced laparoscopic procedures like TAPP, TEP and IPOM–Plus for hernia, Laparoscopic procedures for liver and biliary pathologies and bowel pathologies and many more procedure since he has joined this place.

Dr Gulzar thanked Medical Superintendent SDH Kupwara Dr Shafee, Chief Medical officer Kupwara Dr M Ramzan Mir and DC Kupwara Ayushi Sudan and Directorate of health services for their encouragement and support in achieving such a feat.

Notably, a doctors’ team at the health facility on Friday last pulled a rare feat by performing Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery on an elderly female patient.  

Meanwhile many people cutting across different sections of life have hailed the hospital administration for raising the standards of patient care at the health facility. “We hope the people at the helm of the affairs would continue to come upto the expectations of the patients for the larger benefit of public”, said a group of people.
