Eight Still Missing as Search Enters Fourth Day After Surankote Flash Floods

Srinagar/Jammu, July 22 (GNS): Home Guard, Civil Defence and SDRF units remained actively engaged in search, rescue, evacuation and preparedness operations across Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday amid heavy rainfall, landslides and shooting stone incidents, officials said.

Officials told GNS that search operations for missing PHE employee Ghulam Nabi continued from Salani to Muradpur in Rajouri district.

In Ramban district, a shooting stone struck a passenger tempo bearing registration No. JK06B-9842 at Gangroo, Ramsoo on NH-44, resulting in the death of a husband and wife, identified as Nazir Ahmad and Shakeela Begum, residents of Dhandla, of Doda District. Four others were injured in the incident.

The injured were shifted to District Hospital Ramban for treatment, officials said.

In Poonch, land subsidence at Samote, near Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Surankote, caused partial damage to six residential houses and Middle School Barwal Mohalla. Around 50–60 persons were safely evacuated through coordinated efforts of SDRF, Police and the local administration, officials added.

In Jammu district, SDRF rescued two persons stranded in Tawi River at Sohanjana, Badi Tawi, under Police Post Phallan Mandal, they said.

In Rajouri, SDRF teams also assisted the Power Development Department in safely crossing a river to restore electricity supply despite hazardous conditions, officials said.

Dewatering operations were carried out at Sheelawanti Temple, Kattli in Samba district following waterlogging due to overflow, officials said.

SDRF and Civil Defence teams were also deployed at Magam and Beerwah in Budgam district to ensure prompt response to any emergency arising from the prevailing weather, officials added.

Public safety announcements were made across Jammu Province, while all HG/CD and SDRF units remained on high alert across the Union Territory to respond swiftly to any emergency. (GNS)
