Srinagar, Oct 19 (GNS): A police officer was shot dead by militants in Kenalwan area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday evening.
Official sources told GNS that the militants attacked the officer, Inspector Mohammad Ashraf, as he was returning home after offering prayers.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. However the doctors declared him brought dead on arrival, they said.
A police officer confirmed the killing of the cop. “The area has been immediately cordoned off,” the officer added.
A police spokesperson here said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this (militant) crime,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said, to pay honour and respect to the sop, a wreath laying ceremony led by IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar (IPS) was held at DPL Anantnag, where floral tributes were paid to the slain. DIG SKR, SSP’s of Anantnag, Pulwama and Awantipora besides, other officers and colleagues of the slain cop also laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to him. (GNS)
