Morality means developing good etiquettes and ethics which help an individual to become a good, well disciplined and responsible person of society. The child is not born well-disciplined but it is his upbringing which inculcates in him good morals and ethics. Home is the first educational institution for children, where the main role is played by their parents to develop their Morals and educate them about etiquettes which help them to differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad. It develops their character in such a way that they come to recognise their duties towards their society and they try to perform these duties in the best and possible way.
In present times moral degradation has become common cause for the spreading of social evils because most of the parents did not spend their time with their children and they don’t pay attention to the moral development of their children because of their business in materialistic things which results their children do not get proper love and care from their parents and they search their happiness in other things and get influenced by unhealthy activities. They become disobedient, immoral and get indulged in anti social activities like robbery, drinking, consuming drugs, theft which lead them to cause trouble in the society and they become annoying and harmful persons for the society as well as for their parents.
Islam has also given us teachings regarding the development of Morality and there are many Quranic verses and Ahadith which provide us moral guidance and urge Muslims to develop good character among them and their children as well. The importance of morality can be understood by the hadith of prophet in which prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “There is nothing that weighs more heavily in the balance than good character “(Sunan Abu Dawud 4799). This shows that moral development is not good for this world only but it will become a source of salvation in the hereafter as well. Moral development in childhood is necessary for the welfare of society. Children spend a lot of their time with parents and their needs and desires are fulfilled by their parents, so it is the responsibility of parents to provide moral education to their children and to teach them what is useful and what is harmful for them.
Abdullah Nashih Ulwan confirmed that the role of the family in children’s education is vital. Parental assistance to their children’s education will have a good impact on the child’s learning process. A child who experiences separation from his parents, then the child will undoubtedly learn through experience in himself and also learn from the environment around him. Therefore, if the environment around him is right then the child will also be useful, conversely if the climate is bad then the child will also go along to be wrong and worse. (Dinamika Ilmu , volume 19 (2) , 2019 )
Assistance provided by parents for children will create a pleasant environment for children’s moral development. When parents put their efforts into developing the Morals in childhood, later on their children will become well disciplined citizens of society and society will abstain from many crimes and immoral activities. And it will also remain as a continuous charity for them in another world.
Parents should have to take care of certain things which will help them in the moral development of their children, some of them are:
1. Parents should provide their children religious education as well because our religion has guided us in every aspect of our life and our prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the role model for the whole world who has made us aware about our duties towards our society and towards humanity.
2. Parents should develop friendly relations with their children so that they will not hesitate to share their problems with their parents and will get better advice for their life.
3. It is the responsibility of parents to see whether their children have got the company of good friends or bad and if they are having the company of bad friends who don’t have good character, and then it is the duty of their parents to keep their children away from them.
4. Parents should put in the minds of their children about their responsibilities towards their society and towards humanity and educate them to develop good morals and character so that they will help society in a positive way and will play their role in the development of a well disciplined and civilized society.
5. Parents should not accustom their children with more luxurious life and should not make available for them unaccounted money by which they can get indulged in many social evils.
