Almighty Allah has created everything in this world for some purpose. Man who is considered as the noblest among all creatures (Ashraf ul makhloqat), how can he think that he has been created without any purpose. Allah SWT has given him a great responsibility of doing justice in the world, fulfilling the needs of those who are under his guardianship and following the commandments of Allah in every aspect of his life. And he should keep this thing in mind that Allah SWT has created man to test him whether he will follow his commandments or not, as it is mentioned in Holy Qur’an, Allah said:
الَّذِیۡ خَلَقَ الۡمَوۡتَ وَ الۡحَیٰوۃَ لِیَبۡلُوَکُمۡ اَیُّکُمۡ اَحۡسَنُ عَمَ ا لً وَ ہوَُ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الۡغَفُوۡرُ ﴿ ۲
[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving – (surah al Mulk, verse 2)
In this materialistic world, we have forgotten our purpose in life, our only consent is to compete with others in wealth and fame, for this, we strive hard to earn the money lawfully or unlawfully so that we will spend our life comfortably. We live life according to our whims, desires, hopes and thought that we have been created just for enjoyment and entertainment and we will not be questioned about what we have done in our life as it is mentioned in Qur’an:
اَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ اَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنٰكُمۡ عَبَثاا وَّاَنَّكُمۡ اِلَیۡنَا لََ تُرۡجَعُوۡنَ ﴿23:115
“Or did you think that We created you in vain, (that you should devote all your time to play and entertainment) and that you would not be brought back to Us?”
This verse inclines us toward great concern about the destiny that we are going back to Allah and we will be questioned about this world.
So every individual must know his purpose of life, why he has been created by Allah? What are his responsibilities towards the creation of Allah? What will happen to us once we leave this world? And its answer can be found in the Holy Quran, in which Allah SWT says:-
(Chapter 51: Verse no. 56 )
وَ مَا خَلَقۡتُ الۡجِنَّ وَ الَِۡنۡسَ اِلََّ لِیَعۡبُدُوۡنِ ﴿ ۵۶
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
In this verse, it is mentioned that we have been created for the worship of Allah. Here the word Ibadah (worship) is not used for only prayers but this word is used for the obedience of Allah in every aspect of life whether it would be our relationship with our parents, friends, relatives or human beings, or other creatures of Allah.
We conclude that the purpose of life should be to know how Allah wants us to live life and should follow the Commandments of Allah in every aspect of our life and should believe that we will surely be resurrected and be questioned by Allah for every single deed. Our concern should not only be to live for the betterment of ourselves but the betterment of all the creatures of Allah around us so that we will achieve the purpose of life. Allah has guided us to the purpose of life that is worshipping him. The Quran and Sunnah is one of the best means of knowing the ways in which a person can fulfill this purpose of pleasing Allah and give meaning to his or her life.
