Srinagar, Apr 04 : Member of Legislative Assembly on Doda segment, Mehraj-ud-Din Malik aka Mehraj Malik, on Friday lashed out at central government for introduction (and subsequent passage) of Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament.

Malik, while talking to media as per news agency Kashmir Bulletin, said that there should be no attempt to alter the Quran and Hadith, for (as Muslims) we are supposed to follow them and not to go against.

Malik, who was part of ruling alliance partners meeting held here today under aegis of CM Omar Abdullah, said that they talks on a host of issues.

“An obnoxious atmosphere is being created by targeting the religion(s), and people need to be educated on these matters,” Malik said.

In an apparent dig on central government, Malik said that they are trying to be ‘Thaekedars’ (contractors) of religion and have taken matters pertaining to temple, mosque and land, which they shouldn’t. “These were not the tasks of government, and if they indulge in such matters and continue with such approach, this country won’t progress,” Malik said.

The firebrand legislator, who has over the time hogged limelight for his fiery speeches in assembly, said that the issue (Waqf Amendment Bill) will be vehemently and thoroughly deliberated upon in assembly.

Castigating the government for its myopic approach, Malik lamented saying “is it all they are left to do now. Dharm (religion) related matters should be left to religious people only.”

“(Narendra) Modi won’t alter Ramayan and Gita, and there can’t be any attempt to alter Quran either,” Malik said, while questioning the government as to what are they trying to prove by interfering with religious matters.

“This is a beautiful and great country where we a diversity of people, but they (government) are playing with the sentiments of minority communities, just to appease some vested interests,” a charged Malik said. (KB)
