Karnataka bans 15 medicines including Mysuru-made paracetamol after test failure

The Karnataka Drug Control Department has issued a ban on 15 products, including popular paracetamol tablets and cosmetic items, after laboratory tests in May 2025 declared them unfit for use.

The Karnataka State Department of Food Safety and Drug Control banned the use and distribution of 15 pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including a commonly used paracetamol brand, after tests found them to be unsafe.

A circular issued by the department, which operates under the state Health Department, confirmed the findings following sample tests conducted in May 2025.

Among the banned products is Pomol-650, a paracetamol tablet manufactured by Aban Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. in Mysuru, and O Shanti Gold Class Kumkum, produced by N Ranga Rao & Sons Pvt. Ltd., also based in Mysuru. The list includes a range of injectable solutions, syrups, tablets, and even a veterinary vaccine component.

Other banned items include Compound Sodium Lactate Injection IP produced by Ultra Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. and Tom Bron Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., Mitu Q7 Syrup by Bion Therapeutics, Pantocot-DSR capsules by Svefn Pharmaceuticals, and Sodium Chloride Injection IP 0.9% w/v by Puniska Injectables Pvt. Ltd.

Veterinary products such as sterile diluents for poultry vaccines by Safe Parenterals Pvt. Ltd., and various other formulations like Glimiz-2 (glimepiride tablets), Iron Sucrose Injection (Irogain), and Pyracid-O Suspension were also listed as unfit for use.

Officials have directed that these products should neither be used nor distributed until further instructions are issued. The circular urged healthcare providers, pharmacies, and the general public to ensure immediate compliance to safeguard public health.(HT)
