Sopore, Apr 14 : Sopore Police on Tuesday said that eight miscreants involved in vandalism during recent student protests have been arrested, while 25 more individuals have been identified for their role in disturbing public order.

The action came after several vehicles belonging to locals, staff members, and journalists were damaged, while some school property was also targeted by miscreants.

According to officials as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, strict action has been initiated against those found indulging in unlawful activities, including damage to property during the protests.

Police said efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining identified individuals, reiterating that no one will be allowed to disrupt peace and law and order in the area.

They further urged the public, especially youth, to maintain calm and refrain from engaging in any activities that could lead to legal consequences, adding that the situation is being closely monitored.

Earlier on Monday, tensions had erupted at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore after students alleged that a senior lecturer had assaulted one of their classmates, triggering massive protests within the campus. Dozens of students staged demonstrations, raising slogans and demanding immediate action, while expressing fear over their safety.

Following the protests, police took cognizance of the incident and registered an FIR against the accused teacher. The Directorate of School Education Kashmir also placed the lecturer under suspension pending inquiry, while authorities intensified efforts to maintain law and order in the area. — (KNC)
