Ganderbal, May 19 : A tourist from Mumbai has raised serious concerns over the alleged use of an injured horse for carrying visitors to the famous Thajwas Glacier in Sonamarg, prompting fresh debate over animal welfare practices in Kashmir’s tourist sector.

According to reports, the tourist, identified as Videshaah, noticed the injured horse during her visit to the Sonamarg tourist resort in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and expressed shock over the condition of the animal.

She said such practices should not be tolerated at any tourist destination and called for immediate and strict action against those responsible for using injured animals for tourism-related activities.

The tourist later met Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Ganderbal, Dr Ajaz, and discussed the issue in detail, urging authorities to impose a complete ban on the use of injured horses for carrying tourists in Sonamarg.

She stressed the need for proper monitoring, regular veterinary care, and effective welfare measures to ensure that animals are not subjected to unnecessary suffering during tourism operations.

The incident has once again brought attention to concerns regarding the treatment and welfare of horses used for tourist rides in the Sonamarg area, especially during the peak tourism season when hundreds of visitors travel to Thajwas Glacier daily. (KNC)
