MeT predicts light rain, thunderstorms

Srinagar, May 19 : The Meteorological Department on Monday forecast light rain, thundershowers, gusty winds and hailstorms at scattered to many places across Jammu and Kashmir till May 21.

An official of the MeT department told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy till May 21, with spells of light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds mainly during afternoon and evening hours.

An advisory issued by MeT stated: “Possibility of thunder, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph exists at a few places in Kashmir and Jammu divisions during May 19-21.”

The department said weather is likely to remain generally dry during the forenoon from May 22 to 25, although brief showers may occur at isolated to scattered places during afternoon or late afternoon hours.

From May 26 to 28, weather conditions are expected to remain generally dry, while light rain and thundershowers are likely at isolated places between May 29 and 31.

The MeT department also warned of hot and dry weather conditions at many places during the next two days, with heatwave conditions expected at isolated places in the Jammu division.

Meanwhile, temperatures remained significantly above normal across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather Watch, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 30.7 degrees Celsius, 5.3 degrees above normal, while Qazigund settled at 30.2 degrees Celsius, 5.8 degrees above normal.

Kokernag recorded 29.2 degrees Celsius, 5.4 degrees above normal, Kupwara 28.3 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg 21.6 degrees Celsius, also 5.3 degrees above normal. Pahalgam recorded a maximum temperature of 22.4 degrees Celsius.

In the Jammu division, Jammu city recorded 42 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees above normal, while Katra registered 39 degrees Celsius, 5.4 degrees above normal.

Banihal recorded 31 degrees Celsius, Batote 30.6 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah 30.4 degrees Celsius, the data showed.

In the Ladakh region, Leh recorded a maximum temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius, while Nubra Valley settled at 18.1 degrees Celsius—(KNO)
