New Delhi, July 6 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Shillong, along with two private persons in connection with a bribery case involving an alleged demand of ₹12 lakh for clearing a contractor’s pending bill worth ₹13.38 crore.
According to an official CBI press release, the agency had registered the case on July 1, 2026, against the accused Project Director, a private individual, and others following a complaint alleging that the NHAI official demanded an undue advantage of ₹12 lakh from the complainant to process the outstanding payment.
The investigation revealed that the accused official allegedly instructed the complainant to pay ₹4 lakh as an advance. The complainant was further directed to hand over the money to a private person in Guwahati, who subsequently instructed that the amount be delivered to another private individual in the city.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught one of the accused private persons red-handed while demanding and accepting the advance bribe amount of ₹4 lakh from the complainant.
Following the successful trap operation, the CBI arrested the NHAI Project Director and both private persons. The agency also carried out searches at their respective premises as part of the investigation.
The CBI stated that the investigation into the case is continuing to ascertain the involvement of other persons and gather further evidence.(KNC)
