Udhampur, Aug 14(GNS): One person was killed and another seriously injured after a VDC member allegedly opened fire on two men in the Damnot area of Udhampur district on Friday.
Officials told GNS that the incident occurred when Surjeet Singh S/o Chain Singh, resident of Sasri Damnot Morha, Kulthle, Tehsil Moungri, fired at two persons while they were traveling toward Damnot Police Post.
In the firing, Baldev Singh S/o Karta Singh died on the spot. The other person, Romesh Singh S/o Nak Ram, sustained serious injuries and was shifted to a hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be critical.
Police said all the persons involved in the incident are Village Defence Committee members.
According to initial reports, the firing followed an argument that broke out among them during the journey.
A police team reached the spot immediately after the incident. The area has been cordoned off and further investigation is in progress.
Officials said legal action is being taken and details are being ascertained.(GNS)
