Barring Gulmarg, Mercury Above Normal In Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 5 (GNS): With overnight cloud cover, the minimum temperature remained above normal in Kashmir Valley except for Gulmarg, the weather said on Friday.

A meteorological department official told GNS that the mercury settled at 1.0°C against the previous night’s 0.4 °C in the summer capital of J&K. The minimum temperatures have consistently remained far below normal this season. On January 31, the mercury plunged to minus 8.8°C, the coldest January night recorded in after 30 years.

The minimum temperature also improved in other parts of the Valley, the MeT official said.

The mercury settled at minus 3.6°C in the world-famous tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir against minus 3.3 °C on the previous night while Qazigund, the gateway town of J&K, recorded a low of minus 0.8°C, same as on the previous night. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 1.3°C against minus 5.1°C on the previous night.

The mercury settled at 0.8C in Kupwara against minus 2.3°C on the previous night while Gulmarg, the world-famous skinning resort, recorded a low of minus 9.4°C against minus 6.4°C earlier night and had 1.3 cms of fresh snowfall in the 24 hours till 0830 hours, the official said.

He said there would be “isolated very light rain/snow on higher reaches of Pirpanjal in Jammu divisions and mainly dry weather over the plains of J&K.” in the next 24 hours. The dry weather has been forecast for the next one week in the plains of J&K. (GNS)
