Srinagar, Feb 13: Members of a differently-abled association on Friday held a protest demonstration at Press Enclave Srinagar, urging the administration to ensure effective implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC) that the protesters assembled at the Press Enclave carrying placards and raising slogans, alleging that several key provisions of the Act remain unimplemented in the Union Territory.
The demonstrators stressed the need for strict enforcement of statutory reservations in government jobs and educational institutions, besides timely disbursement of welfare benefits and strengthening of accessibility measures in public infrastructure.
They claimed that despite submitting multiple representations to the authorities, their concerns have not been adequately addressed. The association members further alleged that a similar protest held earlier in Jammu also failed to elicit any official response.
The protesters said persons with disabilities continue to struggle due to inadequate facilities, limited employment avenues and delays in assistance schemes. They called upon the government to frame necessary rules under the Act, ensure departmental compliance and establish monitoring mechanisms to safeguard the rights of the disabled community. — (KNC)
