Kangan, Feb 27 : The Executive Magistrate Kangan has issued a Public Order directing strict enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) within its jurisdiction to safeguard public health, particularly that of children and youth.

According to the order as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, smoking has been strictly prohibited in all public places under Section 4 of COTPA. These include government offices, educational institutions, hospitals, public transport and stands, markets, shops, restaurants, hotels, parks, playgrounds, banks and all other places accessible to the general public. Authorities in charge of such establishments have been directed to ensure compliance and display mandatory “No Smoking” signage as per rules.

The order further reiterates that under Section 6(a) of COTPA, the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to persons below 18 years of age is strictly banned. Vendors have been instructed to prominently display boards stating that sale to minors is prohibited.

Additionally, in accordance with Section 6(b) of the Act, the sale of tobacco products within a 100-metre radius of any educational institution has been completely prohibited. Shopkeepers operating within the restricted zone have been directed to cease such sales immediately.

The general public has been advised to report incidents of smoking in prohibited areas, sale of tobacco to minors, sale near educational institutions, as well as cases of drug abuse or trafficking to Police Station Kangan or the office of the Executive Magistrate for prompt legal action.

The order warns that violations will attract penal action under relevant provisions of COTPA, including Sections 21 and 24, along with other applicable laws. All departments and enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance, with authorities stating that non-compliance will be dealt with seriously under law. (KNC)
