Srinagar: The Government of India on Saturday conducted a nationwide trial of an indigenous mobile emergency alert system aimed at improving public safety during disasters.
The exercise involved flash SMS alerts under the “Cell Broadcast Alert” mechanism, with messages advising users not to panic and that no action was required. Mobile devices emitted a loud alarm and flashing notification upon receipt.
The alerts were delivered through the Integrated Alert System, SACHET, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics. The system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.
It is designed to issue real-time warnings during natural disasters and man-made emergencies, with geo-targeted alerts sent directly to users in affected areas.
The trial is part of efforts to assess system performance ahead of nationwide rollout, after which alerts will be issued in multiple Indian languages across mobile networks.
