20-coach Vande Bharat completes Jammu–Srinagar run after expansion; commuters, traders and pilgrims hail faster, safer and world-class connectivity
Srinagar, Apr 30 : The extended 20-coach Vande Bharat Express successfully reached Srinagar on Thursday after being flagged off from Jammu, marking a major milestone in rail connectivity between the Jammu division and Kashmir Valley.
The development has been widely welcomed by passengers, who described the journey as “historic, comfortable and a game-changer for travel in the region.”
As per news agency JKNS, the upgraded Vande Bharat service now connects Jammu Tawi, Katra and Srinagar, significantly increasing passenger capacity and easing travel pressure, especially during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons. The train’s expansion comes amid rising demand and is expected to strengthen both passenger mobility and freight movement across the region.
Passengers onboard the inaugural extended journey expressed overwhelming satisfaction over the experience. A passenger from Jammu said, “This is beyond imagination for us. Travelling directly to Srinagar in such comfort and speed was not possible earlier. It feels like Jammu and Kashmir is finally fully connected in a modern way.”
A trader travelling with goods from Udhampur said, “This train will benefit us economically. Earlier, transporting goods was difficult and time-consuming. Now we can send products faster, especially during peak season.”
A pilgrim from Katra added, “The journey was extremely smooth. For Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, this extension is a big relief. It connects spirituality with convenience.”
Meanwhile, a student travelling to Srinagar said, “We used to depend on road travel which was uncertain. Now we can travel safely and on time. It is a big relief for students and families.”
Officials said the train has been designed with advanced technology to operate in extreme weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, ensuring year-round connectivity. They added that the introduction of the 20-coach configuration has more than doubled seating capacity, significantly reducing waiting lists and travel constraints.
The Vande Bharat Express, earlier operating up to Katra, has now been extended to Jammu Tawi, further integrating the railway network and strengthening connectivity between the plains and the Valley. Authorities said the service is expected to boost tourism, horticulture trade, and overall economic activity across Jammu and Kashmir.
Railway officials also noted that the high occupancy rate since its launch reflects strong public response, with more than five lakh passengers already having used the service since its introduction in the region. (JKNS)
