50-100 mm rainfall likely in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian on July 21; public urged to stay away from water bodies

Srinagar, July 20 (GNS): The Irrigation and Flood Control Department of Kashmir has issued a flood advisory following a forecast of intense rainfall in the Jhelum Basin, warning of possible flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels.

According to the advisory issued by the Office of the Chief Engineer, I&FC Kashmir, the India Meteorological Department has predicted a “significantly strong spell of rainfall” over the Jhelum Basin during the morning of July 21, 2026.

In South Kashmir, heavy rainfall ranging between 50-100 mm is expected, particularly in the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, and Shopian. Another spell of rainfall of lower intensity is likely during the morning of July 22.

The department said there is a likelihood of flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, especially in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir. Water levels are also expected to rise in major tributaries and in the River Jhelum.

In view of the forecast, the general public, particularly residents of South Kashmir, have been advised to avoid venturing near water channels, khuls, nallahs, rivers or other flood-prone areas, especially in higher reaches and hilly regions. People have also been asked to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel or movement in vulnerable and flood-prone locations to prevent any loss of life or property.

Residents of low-lying areas have been asked to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautionary measures, including keeping themselves informed of the latest weather and flood advisories issued by the authorities.

The I&FC Department said it is closely monitoring the situation and further updates will be issued as required. (GNS)
