Srinagar, June 16: Illegal and unregulated toilet structures along the banks of the Jhelum and Vishaw Nallah in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have triggered environmental concerns, with residents alleging that untreated wastewater and household effluents are being discharged directly into the water bodies.
Locals from several areas claimed that the practice is contributing to pollution and deteriorating water quality, posing risks to aquatic life and the overall ecosystem. They alleged that increasing settlements along the banks, coupled with unauthorized toilet constructions, have led to the continuous release of waste into the water channels.
Photographs from various locations purportedly show toilet structures and wastewater outlets situated close to the banks of the Jhelum and Vishaw Nallah, prompting calls for immediate intervention by the authorities.
Residents have urged the district administrations of Kulgam and Anantnag to identify illegal constructions, enforce environmental regulations and prevent further contamination of the water bodies. They also called for awareness campaigns involving local communities, religious leaders and social organizations to discourage the direct discharge of wastewater into natural water channels.
Environmental observers stressed that protection of water resources requires collective action and timely intervention to prevent further degradation. [KNT]
