J&K Police intensifies crackdown on illegal poppy cultivation in Anantnag & Budgam; 04 cases registered

May 09: Continuing its relentless campaign against narcotics and illegal cultivation, J&K Police achieved another significant success by destroying illegally cultivated opium poppy in separate operations conducted in Anantnag & Budgam.

In Anantnag, Police Station Dooru received reliable information that Bashir Ahmad Beigh son of Late Ghulam Ahmad Beigh resident of Chaango, Dooru had illegally cultivated poppy. Acting promptly, a police party accompanied by an Executive Magistrate and officials from the Agriculture Department visited the site, where the illegally cultivated poppy crop was identified and destroyed on spot. In this connection, FIR No. 66/2026 under sections 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered and investigation has been taken up. In another operation, Police Station Aishmuqam received reliable information that Mohd Ashraf Ahanger son of Ab Rehman Ahanger resident of Badaran had illegally cultivated opium poppy. Acting on the information, a police team along with an Executive Magistrate and officials from the Excise and Agriculture Departments conducted a raid at the location, where the illicitly cultivated poppy crop was destroyed on spot. In this regard, FIR No. 40/2026 under sections 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered and further investigation is underway.

At Dangerpora Budgam, Police Station Budgam destroyed illegal poppy cultivation found on agricultural land belonging to Ashiq Ahmad Darzi and registered FIR No. 113/2026 under Section 8/18 NDPS Act. Similarly, Police Station Khansahib registered FIR No. 89/2026 under Section 8/18 NDPS Act after receiving information regarding illegal poppy cultivation at Banderpora Khansahib. During investigation, a joint team comprising Police, Executive Magistrate, Revenue and Excise officials destroyed the illicit crop following all legal formalities on the spot.

Police reiterates its firm commitment towards eliminating the drug menace from society and warns individuals involved in cultivation, trafficking, or peddling of narcotic substances of strict legal action.
