Srinagar, April 18: The Jammu and Kashmir government has directed the takeover of 58 more schools affiliated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its associated body, Falah-e-Aam Trust, as part of a broader enforcement action linked to security assessments.

The order was issued by the School Education Department following a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs declaring Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir an unlawful organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The latest move follows an earlier decision in August 2025 when authorities assumed control of managing committees of 215 schools linked to the organization, a step that had drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said the current action is based on security and intelligence assessments of several operational institutions found to be directly or indirectly associated with the organizations.

“In some cases, the tenure of existing management committees had lapsed or their functioning had come under adverse review,” officials said.

Authorities have directed respective deputy commissioners to take control of the identified schools and propose new certified management committees to oversee their functioning.

Officials have been instructed to ensure that classes and examinations continue without disruption, with a focus on maintaining normal academic schedules for students.

The order also calls for coordination between district administrations and the School Education Department to uphold academic standards in line with National Education Policy guidelines.

Special teams comprising officials from the education department and local administration will visit the affected institutions to implement administrative changes and oversee the transition process. [KNT]
