Highway Reopens, Traffic Released From Srinagar Towards Jammu
Srinagar, Dec 12 (GNS): People in Kashmir Valley woke to blanket of snow on Saturday morning even as meteorological department has predicted improvement in the weatherman from Sunday.
While Srinagar and some parts o the Valley received first snowfall of the season, the snow melted as the day progressed.
In Srinagar where 25.4mm of rain and snow (converted) was recorded in 24 hours till 0830, the maximum day temperature stood at 8 degrees Celsius against 9.5 degrees Celsius normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund received highest rain or snow equivalent to 26.6mm during the time while Gulmarg received 22.4mm and Pahalgam 21,7mm, an official of the local MeT office said.
For next 24 hours, the weatherman has predicted scattered light rain or snow over Kashmir divisions and isolated light rain or snow over Jammu division.
For next few days, the weatherman has predicted decrease in precipitation.
Meanwhile, after remaining closed for several hours due to snowfall and shooting stones at several places, the Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only road link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, was opened for traffic.
“The one-way traffic was released from Srinagar towards Jammu after clearance of snow and debris,” a traffic department official told GNS.
He said that subject to fair weather and better road condition, light motor vehicles (passenger) shall be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh highway and Mughal road, connecting Shopian with Poonch district, continue to remain closed due to snow accumulation, the official added. (GNS)
