Srinagar, August 7: Amid widespread outrage over the alleged listing of pork products on Blinkit’s newly launched platform in Kashmir, consumers across the Valley have been urged to carefully verify the contents of their online shopping carts before placing orders.
The controversy erupted after screenshots circulating on social media purportedly showed pork products being offered for delivery through the quick-commerce platform, drawing strong reactions from religious organisations and trade bodies, which termed the listings insensitive to the religious and cultural values of Jammu and Kashmir.
The incident has triggered concerns among consumers, with business representatives advising people to remain vigilant while using online delivery applications and to thoroughly check product descriptions before confirming purchases.
Several trade organisations have also demanded that Blinkit immediately remove the controversial listings, conduct a comprehensive review of its product catalogue and introduce region-specific safeguards to ensure that products prohibited or offensive to the religious sentiments of the local population are neither displayed nor offered for delivery in Kashmir.
The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) have all expressed concern over the issue, maintaining that companies entering the Kashmir market must respect local religious and cultural sensitivities. They have sought stronger safeguards to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
Consumer representatives have advised people to remain alert while placing online orders, particularly during the initial phase of Blinkit’s operations in Kashmir, and to immediately report any objectionable or inappropriate product listings to the platform.
The controversy has also renewed calls for e-commerce companies to adopt region-specific catalogues and content filters instead of relying on uniform nationwide product listings in culturally sensitive markets. [KNT]
