Srinagar, Jul 08: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that the memorandum of understanding signed with Iran to end hostilities was “over,” accusing Tehran of violating the agreement and indicating that he no longer wished to engage with the Iranian leadership, according to international media reports.

Reuters reported that Trump made the remarks following a fresh escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran, after Washington carried out military strikes on Iranian targets in response to attacks on commercial shipping and other developments in the Gulf region.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the interim accord aimed at ending the conflict had effectively collapsed. He also referred to Iran’s leaders as “sick people,” while maintaining that diplomatic efforts by US officials could continue despite his own reluctance to engage directly with Tehran.

The memorandum of understanding, signed in June, was intended to halt hostilities, reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

According to media reports, the latest breakdown follows renewed military exchanges between the two countries, with Iran launching missile and drone attacks on US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait after American strikes on Iranian targets.
