Srinagar, Oct 19 (GNS): Two militants were killed in an overnight gunfight with joint team of police and army in Melhura area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said on Tuesday.
They said that a joint team of Police and army’s 55RR launched a cordon and search operation in the village amid reports about the presence of the militants last evening.
As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, they said, the hiding militants fired upon the joint team, triggering off a gunfight in which two militants were killed. However the identity and the group affiliation of the slain were yet to be ascertained, they said. One among the militanst was killed in the initial phase of the encounter and the operation was suspended last night owing to darkness, a police officer told GNS. “The operation was resumed this morning and culminated with the killing of another militant.” The slain militants were affiliated with Hizb-ul-Muajhideen, the officer added.
