Day Passed Off Peacefully With No Untoward Incident Reported Anywhere: Officials

Srinagar, Aug 5 (GNS): Curfew-like restrictions remained enforced in Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, marking the first anniversary of revocation of special Article 370 of the Indian constitution and bifurcation of the J&K into two union territories. By and large, the situation remained peaceful and there were no reports about any untoward incident across the Valley, official sources told GNS.

They said that while curfew was officially lifted from Srinagar, police made announcement early morning at a number of place through public address system fitted on top of vehicles, asking people not to venture out of their homes.

“People are requested not to violate the law and stay indoors as there is a ban on assembly of more than three persons,” the police said.

Concertina wires and other barricades were erected at numerous places in the valley to block roads, the officials said. However, essential services and emergencies were allowed to move as police and CRPF men were seen moving the barricades to allow them after verification.

Authorities in Srinagar had on Monday announced that curfew will be imposed in Srinagar city in view of inputs about violent protests endangering public life and property as the “separatist and Pakistan-sponsored groups were planning to observe 5 August the first anniversary of the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status — as a Black Day.”

However, the order imposing curfew was suddenly withdrawn on Tuesday evening. Further, the Deputy Commissioner had said, the precautionary orders and measures in view of COVID-19 containment viz-a-viz market establishments and other activities in line with the SOPs issued shall continue.

“There shall be complete lockdown in containment/Red zones of district,” he said, adding, “There shall be restrictions on movement of more than 03 persons,” the order said

Also, shops and business establishments shall remain closed and public transport shall remain suspended except essential goods, it added. Reports from other parts of the Valley said that the strict restrictions remained enforced.  (GNS)
