A Delhi court on Friday dismissed the bail application of the Lok Sabha MP from Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, in a terror funding case.

“The bail plea is dismissed,” Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI in its report.

Rashid has been in Tihar jail since 2019 after his arrest by the National Investigation Agency under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the 2017 terror funding case.

During a hearing this week, Rashid challenged a March 10 order of the trial court, which denied him custody parole or interim bail to attend Lok Sabha proceedings until April 4.

In its response to the appeal on March 17, the agency said Rashid could not be allowed to use his status as an MP to “get away from the rigours of imprisonment.”

The agency argued that Rashid could not be granted interim bail or custody parole as he had no enforceable right to attend the Parliament session while in lawful custody.

His name appeared in the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency on charges of funding armed groups and separatists in Kashmir.

The agency filed a chargesheet against several people, including separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

A trial court sentenced Malik to life imprisonment in 2022 after he pleaded guilty.(PTI)
