Srinagar: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s reported decision to skip its scheduled match against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, warning that selective participation undermines the integrity of global tournaments.

In a statement, the ICC said it respects the authority of governments in matters of foreign policy but stressed that directing a national team to forfeit a scheduled match runs contrary to the basic framework of international sporting events. All teams qualifying for ICC competitions are expected to compete under uniform conditions and adhere to the agreed match schedule.

The governing body emphasised that ICC tournaments are built on principles of fairness, integrity and competitive balance, and cautioned that selective participation weakens these foundations and damages the credibility of the event.

While noting that it is awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the ICC said such a move does not serve the interests of the sport or its global fanbase, including supporters in Pakistan. It urged the PCB to carefully assess the broader and long-term consequences, warning that any disruption could have a ripple effect across the international cricket ecosystem.

Maintaining that its priority remains the smooth conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC said delivering a successful tournament is a shared responsibility of all member boards and expressed hope that discussions would lead to a mutually acceptable solution.

Under ICC Playing Conditions, a team that fails to take the field is deemed to have completed a full 20-over innings, with the overs counted for net run rate calculations. Such a forfeit would significantly dent Pakistan’s Net Run Rate, potentially affecting its group-stage standings and qualification prospects.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not issued an official statement. The Indian team is reportedly expected to proceed strictly as per ICC protocol, travelling to Sri Lanka as scheduled, completing training sessions and attending the mandatory pre-match press conference. On match day, India will arrive at the venue and await the match referee’s decision should Pakistan opt not to take the field.

The India-Pakistan fixture remains the most commercially significant contest in world cricket. If Pakistan maintains its stance, the T20 World Cup 2026 would become the first men’s ICC tournament since 2010 without an India-Pakistan encounter.

As per reports, ICC deliberations have indicated that a boycott could impact Pakistan’s share of ICC revenues, though no formal decision has yet been announced.

Relations between the PCB and BCCI have remained strained in recent years amid diplomatic tensions, with no bilateral cricket played for over a decade, and the current standoff marks the latest flashpoint ahead of the global tournament. (with inputs from agencies)
