Leh, March 27: The Centre has approved a Rs 1,196.22 crore tunnel project across Fotu La Pass in Ladakh to ensure safer, all-weather connectivity along the Srinagar–Leh highway, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.

Announcing the project, Gadkari said the plan includes a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel along with approach roads on National Highway-1.

The move comes as authorities seek to address frequent disruptions on the highway, which serves as a vital strategic and supply route to Ladakh but remains prone to closure due to harsh weather conditions.

According to Gadkari, the project will span a total length of 2.65 km, including a 1.96 km twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 km of approach roads.

Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel distance by around 8.5 km while improving safety and efficiency for vehicular movement.

Fotu La, located at an altitude of approximately 4,108 metres, is the highest point along the Srinagar–Leh highway and is known for steep gradients and multiple hairpin bends.

The existing stretch frequently faces disruptions during winters due to heavy snowfall and icing, affecting civilian traffic as well as logistical supply chains.

Officials said the tunnel will help bypass the vulnerable section, ensuring more reliable connectivity and reducing travel time.

The project is part of broader infrastructure efforts aimed at strengthening connectivity and strategic mobility in high-altitude regions. [KNT]
