Srinagar, Jun 27: A commercial tanker came under attack in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, hours after Bahrain accused Iran of launching a drone attack against its territory, in a fresh escalation of tensions across the Gulf, according to various media reports.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), operated by the British military, said the vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The agency confirmed that all crew members were safe and that no pollution or environmental damage had been reported. It added that the incident remains under investigation.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the incident follows a series of recent maritime security breaches in the region, including an attack on a commercial vessel off the coast of Oman earlier this week that Western officials attributed to Iran.
The latest strike came shortly after Bahrain alleged that Iran had carried out a drone attack targeting its territory, describing it as a violation of its sovereignty. Bahrain, which hosts the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet, said it was taking necessary measures to safeguard its security.
