J&K Police intensify crackdown on illegal mining; 10 vehicles seized in Anantnag & Shopian

August 17: Continuing its sustained crackdown against illegal mining and the unauthorized transportation of minor minerals, Police have seized 10 vehicles and registered four FIRs in separate actions carried out across Anantnag and Shopian districts.

In Anantnag, police, during routine patrolling at Mattigund, Chittergul, intercepted three tractors bearing registration numbers JK03A-7973, JK03Q-3136 and JK03Q-2867. The vehicles were found carrying illegally extracted bajri and boulders. The drivers failed to produce valid documents authorizing the extraction or transportation of the material. The seized vehicles and their drivers were taken into custody as per law, and FIR No. 83/2026 was registered at the concerned Police Station under relevant provisions of law. Further investigation is underway.

In Shopian, police carried out similar enforcement actions at different locations and seized six tractors and one tipper involved in unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals. During patrolling, a police party from Police Station Shopian seized a tractor and a tipper found engaged in illegal extraction and transportation of minerals without mandatory permission. In this connection, FIR No. 163/2026 was registered under relevant provisions of law and investigation initiated.

In another action, a police party from Police Station Heerpora intercepted and seized two tractors carrying mining material without valid royalty documents. FIR No. 80/2026 was registered under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway. Similarly, a police party from Police Station Imamsahib intercepted and seized three tractors found involved in illegal mining activities without mandatory permissions. FIR No. 54/2026 was registered under relevant provisions of law, and investigation has been initiated.

J&K Police reiterated its firm commitment to protecting the region’s natural resources and curbing illegal extraction and transportation of minor minerals. Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals found violating mining laws and other applicable regulations. The general public has been urged to cooperate with the police and report any unlawful mining or transportation activities.
