Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor, over allegations of sexual harassment at the varsity.

Last Friday, JNU had dismissed Professor Akoijam of the School of Social Sciences following an inquiry by the university’s internal committee into the allegations.

Akoijam is the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur. Officials said that around 10-12 students from the Centre for Study of Social Systems had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him.

The FIR, dated October 11, was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station under charges of sexual harassment, making sexually coloured remarks, and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, on a complaint by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. The FIR names Akoijam in connection with the allegations; police said the investigation is underway.

It follows a communication the same day from JNU’s Chief Security Officer to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj North, forwarding documents submitted by the university’s Internal Committee and requesting legal action.

What the Internal Committee report says
As per the FIR, the university’s Internal Committee assessed the allegations after examining complainants’ accounts, witness statements, defence witnesses and other material on record.

The letter from the JNU official flagged the committee’s cumulative assessment, which stated that it does not consider the above incident in ‘isolation’, but ‘a recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interaction, sexually suggestive conduct, and unwelcome physical contact’.

The committee’s assessment, as cited in the communication, also referred to an “intimidating and hostile learning environment” and “inadequate professional boundaries in interactions with female students”.

As per the FIR, the alleged incidents took place between July 2025 and May 2026 at the Centre for Studies of Social System, School of Social Sciences, JNU, and other places.

It comes amid a political controversy surrounding the case, with the BJP Mahila Morcha protesting against Akoijam in Delhi.(IE)
