Four-Tier Security Network, Advanced Surveillance and Anti-Drone Systems to Boost Vigil Along International Border

JAMMU, July 16: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has initiated an ambitious plan to further strengthen security along the country’s international borders, with special focus on Jammu and Kashmir, by expanding border infrastructure, creating additional security posts and deploying advanced surveillance technology to counter infiltration, terrorism and cross-border narcotics smuggling.

Official sources said the initiative is part of the Centre’s long-term strategy to transform India’s borders into a technologically enabled “smart security corridor” capable of effectively detecting and responding to emerging threats. The plan aims to establish a robust and integrated border management framework that will significantly reduce infiltration attempts and prevent the movement of arms, ammunition and narcotics from across the border.

Under the proposed measures, additional police border posts and security pickets will be established behind the existing Border Security Force (BSF) deployment along the International Border. The BSF’s operational infrastructure will also be modernised with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, electronic monitoring systems, high-tech sensors and advanced counter-drone technology to detect and neutralise aerial threats.

Sources said a comprehensive four-tier security mechanism will be introduced by bringing together the BSF, civil administration, Union Territory authorities, central security agencies and local communities to ensure seamless coordination in border management. The integrated system is expected to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance capabilities and rapid response during security incidents.

The Centre has also expressed concern over the increasing use of drones by Pakistan-based terror outfits and narcotics syndicates for transporting weapons, explosives and drugs across the International Border. Officials believe that the installation of sophisticated anti-drone systems and enhanced monitoring infrastructure will play a crucial role in preventing such cross-border activities, particularly in sensitive sectors.

Security agencies noted that although the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir have remained relatively peaceful in recent months, forces continue to maintain a high level of operational alertness to thwart infiltration attempts. The strengthened border security framework is expected to further reinforce anti-infiltration measures and intensify the crackdown on cross-border terror and narco-smuggling networks.

Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, the upgraded border security model is also expected to benefit other frontier states by strengthening measures against illegal immigration, organised crime and cross-border smuggling through better coordination, modern technology and enhanced surveillance, officials added.
