Docs urge Kashmiris to get Flu shots to prevent seasonal illnesses

Srinagar, Oct 03 : As autumn sets in and temperatures begin to dip, doctors in Kashmir are advising people to get vaccinated against influenza during October to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and related complications.

Health experts say the influenza vaccine is most effective when taken before the onset of winter. In Kashmir, flu cases generally rise between November and March, coinciding with cold weather, poor ventilation indoors, and increased chances of viral transmission.

“October is the best time to get the flu shot because it allows the body to build immunity before the peak season begins,” Dr Mohammad Shafi, a physician told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

“The vaccine reduces the severity of the disease and prevents hospitalizations, especially among children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.”

Doctors stress that vaccination is particularly important for infants, pregnant women, elderly people, and patients with conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. For these groups, seasonal flu can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and breathing difficulties.

“Every year we see a surge in flu cases during the harsh winter months. Many of these could be prevented if people were vaccinated on time,” the doctor said.

Experts also warn that seasonal influenza symptoms — fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches — often overlap with those of COVID-19. This can create confusion and additional pressure on health services.

“Flu vaccination not only protects individuals but also helps reduce the burden on hospitals already stretched due to multiple seasonal illnesses,” he said.

Despite recommendations, awareness about flu vaccination in Kashmir remains limited. Many people assume flu is a minor illness that does not require medical attention. Doctors, however, caution that flu-related complications can be fatal if ignored.

Health officials said flu vaccines are available at government hospitals as well as private clinics across the Valley. “We urge people to come forward, especially in October, to safeguard themselves and their families,” an official at the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir said.

With the winter months approaching, doctors said that timely flu vaccination, along with basic precautions like hand hygiene and wearing masks in crowded places, can go a long way in keeping families safe. (KINS)
