Ever since man was created and sent down on the earth, the civilization came into existence too. With the passage of time, things did not remain constant and man acclimatized himself with the change. More precisely, it’s the man who brought changes and innovations thus strengthening the civilizations. However being civilized doesn’t mean being modern or being modern doesn’t mean being civilized. Our attitude towards fellow humans in particular and other creatures in general determines how civilized we are. Not only this, but our individual as well as social responsibilities, moral values, empathy, level of education, ethics, adherence to rules and principles are some of the yardsticks for measuring the level of a civilized society. On the other hand modernization is more concerned with the development and technological innovations. In a paradoxical manner, we tend to drift away from exhibiting civil behaviour regardless of our education or advancements. The society we live in needs to shift its focus back on making it more responsible and civilized. In the era of Social media, when the information dissemination is very high, we come across cases of robbery, theft, killings on petty issues, sexual, domestic and physical violence, vandalism, and a multitude of things quite contrary to the very essence of humanity. Despite the fact that such cases cannot be put to an end completely, howbeit the increasing incidents of such nature are leapfrogging. The strong inclination towards materialism has had a negative impact on our societies, occluding the human imperatives. We need to go back and question ourselves whether or not we’re moving ahead in the right direction. Before it’s too late, let’s understand that the need for becoming civilized comes before the need for being modern. A civilized society is a living society!
