In modern society, the media has a key role to play in shaping a democracy. Often termed as the “Fourth pillar of Journalism,” Media acts as a connective link between people and the government. The power it holds is immense, however it can work both ways. It can play a positive role in holding democratic governments accountable and responsible besides highlighting the plights of the general public. Most importantly, if the media is positive and conscious, it can revolutionize the whole democratic setup. Contrariwise, the negative impact it holds is also overwhelming. It’s negative role is equally rather more detrimental than it’s positive impact. Radio Rwanda is a typical example of the irresponsible and genocidal form of journalism which egged on one of the horrible genocides in history. In 1994, the radio station of Rwanda disseminated hate, propaganda, warmongering, and genocidal messages. The modern media more or less is biased and tends to be more inclined towards promoting schism and division rather than harmony and cooperation. In this part of the world, there is one more tragedy that has badly damaged the image of journalism. Every Tom, Dick and Harry, without having proper requisites for becoming a journalist has stepped in the field of journalism. “A Facebook page, mic and a camera” are the only requisites nowadays to become a journalist in Kashmir. This has degraded the profession to a great level. Unaccountable Crowdfunding and spurious social activism on the part of self acclaimed journalists is a calamity of another level. The ramifications of irresponsible journalism are clear now, with the mainstream media losing its credibility and value, both at the local, national and international levels. Given the unhealthy condition of the fourth pillar of democracy, it is incumbent on the responsible media outlets and journalists to uphold the standard of the profession. At the same time, the government should take necessary measures to keep under check the irresponsible as well as spurious practices. Hope is alive!
