Vehicles Carrying Essentials To Be Allowed On Saturday

Srinagar, May 22 (GNS): After day’s closure, the Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only road link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, reopened for traffic on Friday.

Official sources told GNS that stranded vehicles, almost 2000 of them including trucks and passenger vehicles were allowed on priority.

The strategic highway was closed for traffic on Thursday afternoon after massive landslides near Panthyal.  Around 2000 vehicles, mainly trucks, were stranded between Ramban and Jawahar Tunnel due to the closure, they said.

A senior traffic police official said that the traffic on thoroughfare was restored in the morning and stranded vehicles were cleared on priority.

He said subject to fair weather and “good road condition”, vehicles carrying essential communities shall be allowed to ply on the highway from Jammu towards Srinagar.

Meanwhile, Mughal road which connects Kashmir Valley with Poonch, through Shopian district, remained closed due to snow accumulation, the official said.

Regarding Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road, the official told GNS that subject to fair weather and good road conditions, essential commodity vehicles shall be allowed to ply on the thoroughfare. (GNS)
