Jammu: In a rare reversal of gender dynamics in domestic violence cases, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered an FIR against a woman for allegedly harassing and assaulting her husband. The case, reported by The Tribune, highlights an unusual instance where the man is the complainant in a family abuse matter.

The FIR, lodged at Janipur Police Station, was registered against Beera Bibi of Roop Nagar following a court directive from the Special Excise Mobile Magistrate, Jammu. The complainant, Zakir Hussain, a former army personnel now serving in the postal department, had accused his wife of repeated abuse, including physical assault and threats to their children.

According to the complaint, on March 12, Beera Bibi allegedly verbally abused their 7-year-old daughter, threatened her husband, and then hit him with a brick. Hussain also alleged a long history of domestic harassment since their marriage in 2015, claiming that his wife routinely disrupts his work environment and has made his professional life difficult.

Frustrated by the initial inaction of the local police, Hussain approached the court, which subsequently ordered the registration of the FIR. The police confirmed that the case has been formally registered and is being investigated.

While most gender and domestic violence-related FIRs in India typically see men as the accused, this case marks a rare instance where the male spouse has secured legal action against his wife, underlining the evolving discourse around gender-based violence. Authorities have yet to make any arrests or issue public statements.
