“Indo-US Trade Deal Will Hurt J&K’s Core Sectors, Not Benefit Us”: CM Omar Abdullah

Jammu, Feb 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that the proposed Indo-US trade arrangement would adversely impact Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, particularly its horticulture and allied sectors, asserting that the Union Territory stands to incur losses rather than gains.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, the Chief Minister said J&K’s economy is heavily dependent on products like dry fruits, fresh fruits and dairy, unlike coastal regions which benefit from marine industries.

“We have dry fruits, almonds, saffron, apples, kiwis and dairy products. We don’t have any marine industry. If all these items start coming duty-free from America, Jammu and Kashmir will definitely suffer,” Omar Abdullah said.

He said the concerns being raised were based on facts and ground realities. “I am the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. I am talking about the interests of the people here. From this Indo-US trade deal, J&K has no benefit, only loss,” he asserted.

Reacting to criticism and demands for an apology from the BJP, the Chief Minister said there was no question of apologising. “I don’t care if the BJP is apologising or not. It’s their own fault. If they had allowed me to speak, I would have explained my point properly. They didn’t let me speak, so who should I apologise to?” he asked.

Taking a swipe at the Leader of Opposition, Omar Abdullah questioned his credibility on nationalism. “Those who give lectures on patriotism and the Constitution could not even attend the January 26 function. I was sitting next to him, and he left after half an hour. This is the same LoP who teaches us nationalism,” he said.

On the Amarnath Yatra, the Chief Minister rejected allegations that he was “forced” to facilitate it. “When have we not facilitated the Amarnath Yatra? The people of Kashmir have always carried pilgrims on their shoulders. The Yatra is not possible without Kashmiris. We have always facilitated it and will continue to do so,” he said.

Referring to India-Pakistan cricket ties, Omar Abdullah said empty threats should be avoided. “If someone is not strong enough to stand by a threat, they should not issue it. They threatened not to play, then withdrew. Those who cannot stand by their words should not threaten,” he said.

He added that if Pakistan decides to play, they should come and play. “Whatever has to happen in the match will happen,” he remarked. (KNC)
